Is Discord ANY GOOD as a community platform in 2024 (in 147 seconds)
Want a complete Discord 101 of what it is, what can it can do, and how good it is in just 2mins? You came to the right place. :-)
So, Discord is software designed to bring people together into communities, popular with developers, gamers, and those with a nerdy inclination.
Discord communities, called servers, contain multiple channels dedicated to specific topics where users can chat in real time through various platforms.
Discord has grown in popularity due to its engaging real-time chat, which is more fun than posting on message boards and forums. It supports rich text, images, emojis, and even cat gifs, making interactions more enjoyable. Additionally, Discord offers features for streaming, video calls, and voice calls, though the quality can vary.
A major advantage of Discord is its configurability, allowing community leaders to create custom bots, automations, emojis, notifications, badges, and gamification elements. However, overly complex setups can confuse users.
Discord is also affordable, providing great value compared to its rival, Slack. While Slack offers an excellent free plan and might be better suited for certain types of communities, the choice between the two depends on specific needs.
A detailed comparison of Slack versus Discord, including setup, features, configuration, and pricing, is available here: ua-cam.com/video/QHHyP5VHwhE/v-deo.html

    I run an all-woman discord and I have almost 200 women in there in 2 months. It’s going okay! There are certain people who are active and some just join maybe to read or for reference later. It’s easy to navigate I believe. I use it to talk to my subscribers, I love the voice chat feature. We watch movies and UA-cam videos together there too.

      @@jonobacon there’s usually a lot of communication in the “general” tab. I funnel a lot of them from this UA-cam Channel. I do a “Beauty Around the World” series, and a lot of people want their countries represented, so I have an “around-the-world” channel that a lot of women like to share their traditional beauty routines to be featured in future videos. Also, fitness, fragrance, fashion & beauty are also popular channels. I also have a channel for the women in the discord to promote their small businesses/youtube channels. It’s just now getting to a point where I don’t have to be the one initiating conversation all the time. Also, the Community tab on UA-cam has helped a lot, especially polls are really popular. When I ask what my viewers would like to see next, I get more engagement in the comment section of the community tab. I have a Patreon as well, but they barely EVER interact there.

    I'll shoot: Here's some buckets I thought of that I'll use for my company and a breakdown of kind of content I would put in each bucket. 1. Product News and Updates - New product launches, feature update, technical advancements, new integrations that are available 2. Tips and Tricks - Usage tips, best practices, how-to guides, practical application of our products 3. Anticipation and Announcements - Upcoming features, teasers, previews, and product plans 4. Engagement and Interaction - Open ended questions, surveys, polls, etc for feedback loops with the community 5. Thought Leadership and Opinions - Strong statements and opinions, industry trends and updates, expert insights, commentary 6. Customer Stories and Testimonials - Success stories, client testimonials, impact narratives, case studies 7. Community and Leadership - Community initiatives, leadership updates, CSR releases, impact transparency 8. Events and Webinars - event invites, webinars, recaps from past events, upcoming speaking engagements and panel discussions

    I urgently need a brief consultation tip on whether Discourse is suitable for me or not. My task is to create a forum as part of a university project, which is supposed to be for a student-help-student NGO learning app (mobile app only). I have the mandatory requirement to use React Native and to dockerize the entire application. My plan is to build a frontend with React Native and the backend with the Discourse API. I am already familiar with the Discourse Administrator feature, but it is not allowed in my university project since I have to build the frontend with React Native. I have to use Docker and have also obtained the Discourse base image, which already includes a Postgres database. However, the problem is that the Apple M1 chips prevent the image from working (despite selecting arm-64). I urgently need help because I am very desperate and really want to use Discourse. Can any expert please help me here?

    • @jonobacon
      @jonobacon 27 днів тому

      Hey! I think it depends on what the requirements of your university project are. Discourse is written in Ruby, so not sure if using it will be in violation of the requirements of your project? You can certainly use the Discourse API to build another front-end for Discourse...but the API does have some limitations.

    One Facebook is a pain when it comes to Notifications because they set the default to groups members for highlights only members have to go in and actually change their setting to choose the notification alerts they want like for instance all post Facebook doesn't also allow admins to figure out who's inactive in the group and select a file to delete all inactive members out of the group it also appears that Facebook's AI is interfering with the new membership intake
